Shashi Tharoor concluded his defence in Lok Sabha by saying “I trust, Madam Speaker, that I have clarified my position to the satisfaction of this august House”, but the explanation of the junior minister for external affairs appears to have failed to carry conviction with even the government leadership.

His office too tweeted constantly, taking on critics who alleged that his OSD (Jacob Joseph) was present at the Kochi auction. Even 23 minutes prior to Tharoor’s resignation being made public, Joseph sarcastically “thanked” someone for suggesting that he had made matters worse for Tharoor.
