Sharad Poornima, or Sharat Purnima, is observed on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashwin (September – October). Sharat Purnima 2009 date is October 3. Popular belief is that the divine Raas Lila of Lord Krishna with Radha and Gopis happened on the Sharad Purnima night. It must be noted that in 2009 in some regions the Purnima begins on October 3 and ends on October 4.

As Sharad Purnima is associated with Sri Krishna Leela, the day is also referred as Raas Lila Divas or Ras Lila day. A fasting, Sharat Poornima Vrat, is also observed on the day in some regions by some Hindu communities.

People believe that as the moon is nearest to the earth on the day and as moon’s rays has several curative properties it will be helpful to human beings. So people spend the evening under moonlight.

The significance of Sharat Purnima is mentioned in the 10th chapter of the Srimad Bhagavad Purana. Sharad Poornima is of importance in places associated with Lord Krishna like Mathura, Braj, Vrindavan and Nathwara.
