Peepli Live Reviews | Peepli Live Movie Review

Peepli Live is a satire on the pledge of the farmers and brings to light their struggle. It also tells how the people right from the politicians to the bureaucrats to the television reporters to the local people try to exploit a situation to their advantage.

Directed by debutante Anusha Rizvi, Peepli Live features Omkar Das Manikpuri, Raghuveer Yadav, Malaika Shenoy, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shalini Vatsa, Farrukh Jaffer and Vishal O Sharma in the lead roles. It is hitting the theatres today.

Peepli Live is a good one. It’s a compact script which has been executed with equal passion. There are no actors here only characters that all of us have seen or met at some point. I appreciate how Anusha has chosen unfamiliar faces with sound background in theatre.

There are moments that genuinely amuse you: the one where a breathless reporter barges into a channel’s newsroom proclaiming the latest Breaking News on Saif Ali Khan. The clinical manner of the media`s workings is effectively demonstrated: When TV reporter Nandita Malik is given the story of Natha`s suicide, she asks quite plainly, `But what is the big deal?`.

Performances by the cast are a treat, particularly by Manikpuri as Natha and Shalini Vatsa playing his wife. The film is technically proficient. Music is evocative.

It is the comic treatment of a cruel situation that has made it so engrossing. The entire rigmarole of breaking news, TRPs, villager bytes and grass-root opportunism is both believable and hilarious. We, as a nation, lack the ability to laugh at ourselves. Peepli [Live] not only does so but does it with a healthy irreverence. Hope it gets appreciated.
