US auto giant Ford Motor Co on Wednesday unveiled its first small car for the Indian market, “Ford Figo”

The Figo, which is colloquial Italian for “cool”, will be manufactured at the company’s Chennai facility and launched in markets by early 2010.

The Chennai unit is undergoing a $500-million upgrade as Ford seeks to make India a global production hub for its small cars.

The Figo will be coming in 2 engines – the 1.2L petrol and the famous 1.4L Diesel.

The 1.4L Duratorq diesel engine produces 69bhp and torque of 160Nm. The 1.2L DuraTec MPFI Petrol engine produces 72bhp and torque of 104Nm. These engines will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. An automatic variant is not yet on plans and we dont expect it either.

The Figo comes in 4 variants: (both Petrol and Diesel)

* EXi
* ZXi
* Titanium

Diesel – 18 kmpl

Estimated Price
Ford will definitely price the Figo very competitively and is expected to start from Rs 3.5L-5.7L.

At that price, the Figo will compete against other compact cars, including pricier versions of the Tata Nano, a tiny Indian-made vehicle from Tata Motors (TTM) that went on sale in July. “We’re confident that the new Ford Figo will be extremely attractive to Indian car buyers,” said Ford India President Michael Boneham.
